This week, the world observes the International Day Against Hate Speech, one of the most prominent international days during which the world remembers the extremely dangerous effects of hate speech and emphasizes the collective stance rejecting it at all national, regional and global levels.<\/p>\n

As part of its ongoing efforts to raise youth awareness about hate speech and its negative impacts, as a growing crisis within Arab societies, Maat for Peace Association held a virtual training workshop titled \"Counter-Narratives: A Scientific Approach to Combating Hate Speech\" on June 23, with the participation of a group of Egyptian and Arab university students.<\/p>\n

With the participation of journalist and researcher specialized in monitoring hate speech, Marcelle Nazmy. The first session of the training workshop focused on providing an introductory overview of hate speech, its main motivations, and its relationship to the image of hatred and racism faced by certain groups within different societies. Additionally, it addressed the relationship between hate speech and digital violence directed against various groups, primarily women. The workshop also discussed the most significant outcomes of hate speech targeting women, including campaigns of gender-based belittlement, gender stereotyping, victim-blaming, and sexual threats.<\/p>\n

In the same context, the workshop highlighted logical fallacies as a recurring element in hate speech directed against women. It then conducted a series of practical training activities that focused on testing the participants' ability to identify logical fallacies in various forms of hate speech prevalent on social media.<\/p>\n

The second session of the training workshop, led by Eman Fahem, Director of the Sustainable Development and Hate Speech Combat Unit, focused on introducing the most prominent ways to formulate counter-narratives to hate speech, which include building empathy and creating educational content as direct means to respond to hate speech in a way that reduces its impact on the most affected audience. The workshop concluded its activities with a series of practical activities aimed at enhancing the participants' ability to test the best methods for responding to already prevalent forms of hate speech on social media.<\/p>\n

The workshop is part of Maat Association's project to raise youth awareness about hate speech as a looming threat to society and to build the capacity of young people to combat it. Maat Association has focused on coordinating a series of activities over the past years, with the participation of a diverse group of experts and activists in the field of monitoring and combating hate speech through peaceful expression of opinion and formulating counter-speech.<\/p>\n
